Here are some advice when sitting for an interview:
Before the Interview
- Confirm all relevant information of your interview such as the date, time, and venue. If the interview is conducted virtually, make sure you have the correct link to the online interview.
- Plan your interview attire. We usually expect candidates to dress formally.
- Strengthen your application by learning about your role, department, and university. The interview will most likely ask questions relating to these areas.
- Reflect on yourself. What are your strengths, weaknesses, additional skills, interests, and future goals? Why did you apply for this role? Why UM? What are your plans in contributing to the university? It’s good to prepare your answers beforehand.
- Check if there are any requirements you need to prepare (mock teaching, presentations, or test).
During the Interview
- Show up early. This includes entering the interview link early.
- Keep a composed manner. Try to relax. If you’re nervous, it’s okay to slow down and regain your composure. You may also ask the interviewers to repeat their question.
- Try to speak clearly. If you’re sitting for an online interview, this includes having a quiet background and good internet connection.
- You may ask questions to your interviewers. This shows your interest in the position, and an opportunity to learn.
- Ask them about your next steps – Will there be a second interview? When will they release the results?
- Be polite and thank your interviewers for their time.
